Bayerische Motoren Werke - commonly known as BMW needs no introduction. It is a name that is synonymous with speed, luxury and design. The company was founded in 1916 initially as an aircraft engine developer while also building motorcycle engines, household items and farm equipment. It was not until 1928 that it turned its attention to sports cars and larger luxury cars. The BMW M division released it's first mid-engined 'supercar' in 1978. This was closely followed by the M5 in 1984 and the world renowned M3 in 1986 along with it's first V12 engine in the luxury BMW 750i. BMW owned the Rover group right up until 2000 when it sold off most of the Rover brands apart from Mini and Rolls-Royce which it still owns today. In many ways BMW has been years ahead of its competitors - the company built first electric vehicle in 1972 and this was called the BMW 1602e - the car sadly never made it to the market largely due to the success of its other models and also because in those days it only held a charge of around 20 minutes - it did however lay the groundwork for the Electric & Hybrid motors they produce today.
